Sneak Peek - Storybook Cottage

I have been crazy busy lately and enjoying every minute of it! The playhouse above is one of the designs I've been working on and am very excited about. It has gone through several changes, but is at the point where I am creating construction documents and a material list. Before it's all said and done, I'd like to look at a few more material options for the exterior. This floor plan could easily go from a storybook style playhouse to a modern play space by simply changing the materials.

This playhouse is perfect for sleepovers! A bed nook is built into the wall, creating a great place to curl up with a book or just daydream. It also has a trundle bed that pulls out providing plenty of room for guest. I'm still looking at options, but the sketch above shows a circular hobbit style opening into the bed nook. What's more enchanting than a house made of candy? I really can't think of anything. As a child, I made a few gingerbread houses, but this year will be the first time I make one with my boys. Candy and architecture...this is going to be fun! I did a bit of research just to see what was out there, and found some amazing life size structures. Our gingerbread house building could easily get out of control. I REALLY want to make something big, but I think in order to finish this project we will have to limit the size to something that will fit on our dining room table, maybe even shoebox size. I am also reminding myself that the point of this project is to have fun with my four year old. Any one with a four year old knows their attention span is not that long.

Now that I'm officially fascinated with gingerbread houses, I feel the need to properly research them. If you have seen an amazing life size gingerbread house that I've missed let me know. In my initial research I ran across some beautiful illustrations that I'll share soon too.

If you have a moment to really study these pictures notice the level of detail and ornamentation. Also notice the shape and proportions. No surface is left undecorated, and most of them have a very prominent roof line. They're all very whimsical and fun, and have a distinct storybook style.

Garden Whimsy

I am so excited to finally share pictures of the playhouse I've been working on! Just in time for Christmas too! This whimsical playhouse featuring curved walls and a storybook style door is now available and at a great price. The playhouse pictured above is going for $3,200 + shipping to the first person I hear from. If you are interested or have any questions, contact me at holly@aplaceimagined.com or use the contact page here. After that, I will be taking orders on my site for $4,200. Why is this one significantly reduced? It needs to be moved, so I can start on the next design! Hopefully very soon we'll be in a large shop, but for now we're working in a small space.

The playhouse is constructed with quality materials and should last for generations if maintained. The base or floor is treated wood, and the roof is stained cedar. The front and back walls are painted tongue & groove. The rounded walls are grooved to overlap and then caulked and painted. Overall exterior dimensions are: 6'-6"wide, 6'-8" long, and 7'-8" high.

A bench and kitchen counter is built into both of the curved walls leaving more floor space for playing. The interior floor space measures 4'-5" x 5'-8." Interior walls are painted beadboard. I love the light airy feel of the white with blue accents. The triangle pendant banner pictured above was crafted specifically for this playhouse and is included. It coordinates with the curtain that hangs under the play kitchen counter (also included). Unfortunately, my vintage sock monkey, doll bed, and quilt are not included. Thankfully my mom kept all of my playhouse furniture, and now I have it to pass on to my children.

Chalkboards line both sides of the play kitchen. They have been a hit with the children that have inspected the playhouse. The picture below shows the distressed stained wood floor. It is built similar to a deck, allowing any water that may find it's way in to drain. The window will have shutters to match the color of the door as well as a window box on the exterior. (That's on my to do list for tomorrow, but I just couldn't wait to share these pictures). I'll post more pictures of the back wall and window soon! Oh, the apron hanging on the back wall is also included! It's killing me to let go of that apron, but it really belongs with the house.

My son, 4 yrs. old, is pretending to wash his hands in the sink. The highest part of the inside of the playhouse is 6'-3" high making it tall enough for me to stand up in, but still approprietly scaled for younger children. This playhouse should fit well into most back yards and is a piece that will add a touch of whimsy to your garden.

I love this ceiling! The tongue & groove boards are painted blue with the exposed structure painted a nice shade of green. This is by no means the most efficient way to paint a ceiling, but I believe it was worth the time.

I can't wait to start the next design, but at the same time, I am going to be sad to see this one go. I have enjoyed every minute working on it. I know it will make some lucky children very happy. Oh, the memories it will hold...

Making A Playhouse Your Own

If you are playing in your play kitchen, you'll need an apron, and not just any apron will do. It must coordinate perfectly with your kitchen and looks great on. As a mom, I'm very aware of how fashion conscience a four year old can be, and how once they find something they like they will wear it every day. (My son wore his Captain America Costume for a solid week after Halloween...yes we washed it). This apron was designed to be very durable as well as fashionable. It is fully lined, and there are no unfinished edges. The neck strap is Velcro, making it easy for little hands to get on and off.

It's a fun way to dress up a pair of jeans and boots! I may need to make this in a larger size...

It's impossible to design a play space and not think about all of the details including furnishings and accessories. I opened an Etsy shop that I and my elves (mom & granny) are working hard to stock. It's a bit sparse at the moment, but eventually will be full of handmade aprons, baby doll quilts, and play furniture. In addition to the handmade items, I'm always on the lookout for vintage items that will give your playhouse personality and make it uniquely yours.

I'll be adding more aprons, doll quilts and pendants to the shop between now and Christmas, so check back if you don't see exactly what you're looking for.

Christmas is just around the corner, and if you're thinking about making something like a play kitchen or fully stocked coffee shop you might want to get started soon. I was blown away Millz Coffee! Check out 45 Wall Design for tons of pictures and inspiration. Did you notice the custom logo and the functional cardboard espresso machine? Love it! Oh, and the vintage cash register...wonder if mine is in mom's attic. If you're on a tight budget but have some time to spare this (or something similar) would be the perfect Christmas present. Feeling a bit intimidated, start with something a tad more basic, and who knows you may surprise yourself. Don't forget to send me pictures!

According to the Indianapolis Art Center, McNaughton's goal with the work is to show viewers that sculpture can be interactive and touch heavily into the imagination.

I think I'm going to start a file of images to serve as inspiration for whenever I hear "You can't build that," or "You're going to do WHAT?" I truly admire those who are successful in transforming the imaginary into a tangible place.

I realize I'm a day late with this post, but there's no way I'm going to file it away till next year! Hope everyone had a great Halloween! Don't worry, it's not too late to check out this years Story Book Pumpkin Village at the Dallas Arboretum. (You have till November 14th). The exhibit includes four walk-through houses that represent a pumpkin based children's book. I love this idea...what else could I make a playhouse out of? Ideas anyone?

The Baker Family Playhouse was constructed c.1893 by Captain James A. Baker for his daughter Alice. At the time of its construction, the Baker family lived at 1104 San Jacinto Street. Over the 118 year history of the playhouse, it moved with the family five times and entertained four generations of Baker children. In 2010, the playhouse was moved to Sam Houston Park to spare it from demolition and to allow future generations of Houston children the chance to enjoy its charm. The Heritage Society plans a full restoration of the playhouse. The playhouse is located behind the Nichols-Rice-Cherry House.

Do you already have a play space that just needs a little redo? Stina Saem did a beautiful job turning her old playhouse into a shabby chic retreat for both big and little girls! Check out her blog for more pictures and details. If you're not careful a playhouse can quickly become a storage room. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for creating spaces that have the potential for dual functions, but if you have the space why not use it for something more fun! I imagine there will be many play dates here, now that it's more inviting.

I'm loving the play kitchen with little touches of pink! Great stove too! Another thing I noticed about this playhouse is the beautiful natural light - a detail you don't want to overlook.

Play Kitchen Apron

The playhouse I'm building is well under construction and will be complete a week from today! I've already started thinking about the finishing touches. The playhouse will have a built in play kitchen, which means some lucky little chef will need an apron. So with that in mind, I was off to the fabric store. After at least an hour (maybe two), I forced myself to select just enough fabric for one apron, a skirt for under the sink, and a banner. I can not stress how difficult it was to not walk out of the store with enough fabric to do several different schemes.

I have many memories as a child of my mom sewing. She made everything from Halloween costumes to baby doll clothes. Now that I'm in my 30's and have children of my own, I've decided it's about time that I learn how. I wish I could say I did the apron above, but all I really did was sketch out the pattern, cut it out, and sew the pocket squares together...all with mom's guidance. She took the rest home and finished it up. When she brought it back , not only was it done, but it had a mini rolling pin and oven mitt in it! Thank you mom!

Wish Upon a Star!

One thing I love about road trips are the treasures you find along the way! My brother got married last weekend in Batesville, MS. On the way up, we stopped at an antique store just off the side of the highway (thankfully I was riding with my mom, grandmother, and aunt who were more than willing to stop). I found an amazing whimsical chair that would be perfect in a girly playhouse. As soon as I'm done refinishing it, I'll post before and after photos. I also found these old iron stars that would look great on a rustic hideout. The cast iron stars were originally used as reinforcement for brick walls, but would work well attached to some old salvaged siding...now I just need to find the siding. I already have some beautifully aged tin from an old barn near my parents house that could be used for the roof. One of my next challenges will be to create a little boy's clubhouse completely from salvaged materials. My garage is already beginning to look a bit like a salvage center!

In the Playhouse Business!

A Place Imagined is now officially in business! The morning started off with a trip to the lumber yard to stock up on everything necessary to build the playhouse pictured above. After a day of running around town getting materials we had just enough time to get the base (or floor) of the playhouse completed. The weather was gorgeous, making it ideal for working outside. Tomorrow we'll get the walls framed up and maybe even the roof. I can't wait to see the form start to shape up. I love this design! This playhouse is scaled for younger children, but adults can easily stand up in it. On the interior it will have a bench built into one of the curved walls and a play kitchen built into the other wall - very efficient use of space. I'll be posting pictures of the progress, so check back for updates.

Oh, if you're wondering, this one will be for sale. It will ship fully assembled from Mississippi. I'll have a price worked up on it as soon as we're done with construction. It should only take about two weeks to complete. Overall dimensions are 6'-2"x6'-5" with a height of 7'-6". I'll also be taking orders...it's not too soon to think about Christmas! It's that time of year again! CASA is selling raffle tickets for 19 playhouses! The playhouse pictured above is being auctioned. If you're in the area stop by and check them out. You can also visit their site and place a bid or purchase tickets.

Here's the specifics (forgive me for the copy paste):

The ORIX Parade of Playhouses at NorthPark Center, provides and opportunity to help abused and neglected children realize their dreams of finding safe, permanent homes. In its 15th year, the event raises public awareness about child abuse, the plight of children in foster care in Dallas County and ways to help.

During the two-week Parade of Playhouses, visitors to NorthPark purchase raffle tickets for chances to win one of many extraordinary, custom-built playhouses. The playhouse drawing is held during the event’s closing ceremony.

The 2011 ORIX Parade of Playhouses will feature 19 custom-designed playhouses. Raffle tickets may be purchased online beginning July 25 and at NorthPark Center beginning August 5. Raffle tickets are available for $5 each or 5 for $20. Each $50 purchase receives an entry for a special drawing for 4 round trip Southwest Airlines tickets. All proceeds from Parade of Playhouses help Dallas CASA recruit, train and supervise volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the protective care of the courts.

The Pricey Playhouse Trend

A recent New York Times article brings to light a thriving playhouse business despite the economic condition. I'd like to note that while this may at first glance look like a trend, parents have been building lavish playhouses for their children for some time now. There is a bit of debate as to whether or not anyone should spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a mini mansion for their children...let me know your thoughts. If you've read much of this blog, you know I am fascinated with these tiny structures regardless of their price tag. (In a way they're tiny architectural treasures). If built well and maintained, they can last for generations. When building a playhouse, extravagant or modest, consider how it's going to impact our environment. Select your materials carefully and think about the expected lifespan of the structure. Do you want to build something that can stand the test of time, be passed on from generation to generation? Maybe you want to create a plays space that when your children have outgrown it can be disassembled and recycled. Create thoughtfully and get your children involved in the process! Oh, and don't forget to send me pictures!

I was delighted to find the Princess house in Wolfsgarten. Here's a great historical write up from GG Online:

The park in the hunting lodge wolf garden princesses standing house was built in Art Nouveau style. It was in 1902 by Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867 - 1908) built by order of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig to Princess Elisabeth, born 1895 in Hesse and the Rhine as a playhouse and is unique in Germany.

Completed in 1902, playing house, which consists of a brick-mechanical framework, the mixture of a villa and a villa that is adapted to the size and needs of a child. There is one floor and consists of two rooms, the parlor and the kitchen. The ceiling height is 1.90 meters. The initials E, which are mounted on and versatile in the gesture, correspond to the state of the princess.

Apart from the high roof and built on the corner of the tall white chimney covered with an oval lateral opening and the great gilded crown.

Most of the furniture, the wallpaper and the gardens were also designed by Olbrich and still exist today.

Green Playhouse

This amazing green playhouse was built by Pai‘ea Millwrights and Philip K. White & Associates and auctioned off in support of the Hawaii Nature Center.

The Green Leaf did a great write up on it:

The playhouse is made of recycled redwood, cedar, fir and luan. It's outfitted with a small photovoltaic panel on the roof to power a bubble blower on the composite Trex lanai. It also has a rain catchment bucket to help water the little WikiGarden. It's a way to show keiki sustainable living.
"Hawaii is a place where we have the option to build very lightly and still have some comforts," said Logan Pai‘ea White, founder of Pai‘ea Millwrights. "Refinement can always be added through emphasis on design, functionality and creativity. The playhouse is a model of these values."

Loved this cave when I ran across it over at week day carnival! As a mother of two boys, I know this would be a hit at our house. Created by Our Children's Gorilla, the skull cave is not only a great indoor hideaway, but it's also practically designed. The image below shows how when not in use it can easily be rolled up and stored. How cool is that!

As a mom of boys only I'm always on the lookout for fun play space ideas that are designed with boys in mind. Don't get me wrong, as a child (and even now) I would have begged for my own skull cave. If you've created a great boy play space send me pictures!

Petite Painted Lady

First of all, sorry for the lack of post lately. I've been a bit busy trying to focus on completing a few playhouse designs. The playhouse above is a custom design I'm working on. It's a tad bit whimsical and would fit beautifully into almost any back yard. The interior is roomy enough that it could be used as a garden office or studio after the kids are grown. The bay or boxed window on the end has a built in seat providing the perfect place to daydream...if I could only escape there now. I'm going to render a couple more designer color schemes and will post those as soon as they are done. It will be fun to see how changing the color changes the look. By Kids, For Kids, Helps Kids, inspired by the plight of a child, seeks to engage teens to create playhouses for kids and donates the funds raised by raffling the playhouses to kid-oriented charities. The first such cause was Respite Care of Fort Collins. The inaugural whimsical playhouse was designed and built, largely from recycled and donated materials, by Rohan Goel. As a result of the project’s success, he established the By Kids, For Kids, Helps Kids foundation to involve other teens working together to benefit even more kids with special needs.

How cool is this! Love the fun colors and quirky shape. I realize I'm a bit behind posting this one. It appears to be way back from 2009, but there's nothing wrong with a little back tracking...right? Check out By Kids, For Kids, Helps Kids for more information and pictures. It's that time of year again! Fundraisers are in full swing. A total of 15 playhouses will be auctioned off supporting Rebuilding Together Peninsula. Playhouses are currently on display at Stanford Shopping Center Palo Alto, California. The Dreams Happen Auction and Gala will begin at 6:30 June 4th. Picture Perfect Playhouse

I am loving Birdie Blue's adorable playhouse! As you all know I have a special place in my heart for homemade play spaces. There is something special about a playhouse that has been handcrafted. They tend to have a personality of their own reflective of the family that created it. The exterior is white stained cedar with pops of color at the door and shutters. Check out that custom screen door! Details like these really add to the character of the playhouse, not to mention keep out bugs while still allowing the breeze in. Vents were also added to help with natural ventilation. There's nothing worse than having a playhouse that's too hot to enjoy.

The interior is decked out top to bottom(literally)with everything a girl could want! What a dreamy loft! Curtains blowing in the breeze...

I'd like to point out that this playhouse has been through a redo. Check out the before picture. A good playhouse should be able to grow with your family, but just like a real house it may need a bit of maintenance and care over the years. A fresh coat of paint may be all you need to give your playhouse new life. I hope this playhouse inspires you to take a second look at the forgotten playhouse in your backyard. It may be time to make some new memories

Can I get an adult version of this? Six amazing playhouses were designed and built for the 2011 Cubby House Village at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. They're all great designs, but this one really caught my eye.

Here's the write up on Open House:
Open House has been designed like a life-size toy, It’s singular material and object like form is intended to appeal to a child’s perception of a house – four walls, a pitched roof and a chimney - much like a Monopoly House. Whilst the exterior is very literal at first glance, “Open House” needs to be ‘unpacked’, which provides a flexible and ever-changing dynamic that allows the end user to create a myriad of real and imagined spaces.
Elements take on multiple identities – the wall that folds down to open the ‘house’ up to the garden also becomes a deck, or maybe a drawbridge, or maybe a shop window. One or more features can be unpacked at any one time. Once fully unpacked or opened, there is potential for a number of children to play in and around “Open House”.
With its contemporary detailing yet traditional form, “Open House” has the flexibility to sit well within any backyard. The design of “Open House” means it’s up to the proud home owner to decide just how it looks and works – giving them a sense of ownership of their very own abode.

The Milk Bar by Good Constructions & Atkinson Pintifex, with Maddison Architects

The Milk Bar is crafted using iconic Australian materials. Recycled milk crates are stacked together to form the exterior walls and these are weather proofed with form-ply lining. A canvas awning rooftop provides the perfect cover and ventilation.
The Milk bar was designed by leading Australian architect and TV personality, Peter Maddison –host of the highly successful first series Grand Designs Australia.
The design objective was to provide something that was funky, recyclable and reusable which children could really interact with. Another unique feature of this cubby house is how simple it is to construct, and it’s extremely environmentally friendly!
Whilst both Good Constructions and Atkinson Pontifex have built award winning architectural homes it is a first for them to build something from milk crates and canvas!

This one took my breath away! While this is not a child's play space, it's sure to inspire a daydream or two. It's beautifully constructed, and I love the way it becomes part of the landscape. After seeing Jill's backyard play space (previous post), I have begun to think more about the degree of enclosure necessary to create a playhouse. Children have such wonderful imaginations, something as simple as a change in ground material or an elevated platform could quickly become a castle and in the next minute transform into a rocket ship. So with that in mind, how much of a visual barrier is really required to create a space? I do see the value in having a private little nook tucked away from the rest of the world, but in some cases, such as on a school playground, you may need to see the children at all times. There are some great examples out there of creative ways to minimally define play spaces, and I'm on the look out, so if you know of one send it my way.

The design above is by Truitt Foug Architects. I love the modern shape and chunky structure! I can imagine kids climbing the walls of this one! If you look closely you can see a second floor or loft area. It appears to be 6x6's (I'm guessing size) resting on the horizontals that make up the walls. Sometimes the most basic straightforward designs are the best. Also, notice that the entire play space was pulled off using only one material. Ok, one material and fasteners, but still.

It still amazes me that there is such variety in playhouse design. It's great to go from looking at a highly ornate playhouse of the past to minimalist modern structure like this one!

Charlcote Summer House

In my search for playhouses of the past I have stumbled upon some elaborate playhouses, but this one...Wow! What sets this tiny house apart from the rest? First of all the interior wood work is more detailed than many typical (adult sized) homes, but the most intriguing detail has to be the aviary. That's right, a home for song birds built into the structure of the playhouse. Imagine having a tea party while your walls sing! Talk about an early form of surround sound!

This picturesque storybook playhouse is located in Charlcote Park, home of the Lucy family since the 12th Century. The park is now cared for by the National Trust and is open to the public. The park itself has a rich history. Shakespeare has been rumored to have poached deer in there. The Charlcote Summer House was built for Lady Mary Elizabeth Lucy's children and was modelled on Plas Newydd, Llangollen, the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsoby, whom Lady Mary Elizabeth Lucy visited as a child.

The tiny house is a single story structure with an L shaped plan. The exterior is composed of brick with applied rustic timber. The canted west gable end has rustic timber surrounds at the openings and a segmental-headed entrance with paired bark-paneled doors. Beautiful stained glass windows dating 1826 and 1828 flank the entrance. The south front has a canted bay window with gablet and wood lattice glazing as well as another small stained glass window. The east end has a gabled bay containing an aviary with bark cladding below the openings with meshed frame to front and projecting side nest boxes. The north front has a wing with detached stack to the left of the oriel-like timber projection.

The interior consist of two rooms finished in reused timber fielded paneling and decorative woodwork. Both rooms have canted ceilings. It is also decked out with mirrored cupboard doors, a segmental arch to the main room, and a fireplace with mantle.

A couple years ago when I began researching playhouse design, I was a bit surprised to find such extreme playhouses. Many modern day playhouses are fully equipped with electricity and some even have running water, not to mention flat screens and the latest video games. Initially I thought these extreme playhouses were just a trend or fad, but I am quickly realizing lavish play spaces have been around for generations. I am curious to hear your thoughts on these extreme, over the top playhouses. They may not be a necessity (you know I'm a fan of the cardboard box), but aren't they fun! I know there are at least a few of you out there with opinions, so lets hear them! My take - I believe the process of designing and building a playhouse can be as much fun as enjoying the final product. With that in mind, creating something like this with your children, not just for them, could be memories you share for a lifetime. I am very aware that not everyone has a budget for this type of playhouse, but that doesn't mean you can't create something amazing. There are many examples here of playhouses built almost entirely from salvaged materials. As a designer I can appreciate both the salvaged shanty and the extreme playhouse. Ultimately they both provide children with their own personal space where their imagination can run free.

I also want to apologize for the lack of post lately. I've been working very hard to complete a set of playhouse plans that will hopefully be available for download soon. I've also been working on a prototype for an indoor toddler playhouse...a project I'm very excited about! As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, I wan this year to be a year of creativity.

Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts and Whatever the Heck Else We Could Squeeze in Here

I sat down to flip through this book for the first time with my 3 year old son in my lap. I had no idea what we were about to discover. There was a constant mommy look at this, look at that, ooh a dinosaur...I want that. While I enjoyed his reaction, I really wanted the book all to myself. The pages are like mini works of art, a sort of illustrated thought process. While this book is not a step by step how to book, it's sure to inspire some wildly creative projects. Page after page is filled with sketches, notes, and an occasional character. Some of the designs are for children, some are for adults, but all are tiny. Most of the projects in the book are budget friendly, some can even be made of scavenged materials. The book itself is even handmade. Derek Diedricksen has not only written a book, but is also building many of the designs. His work was recently featured in the New York Times. (Many great pictures there). Kids Backyard Play Space

With a hint of spring in the air, images like these make me want to get the kids outside and play! Jill sent me these amazing shots of the outdoor play space she designed and built for her girls. Here's what she has to say about it:

I set out to design an open ended playhouse for our daughters. I also wanted a space outside of the structure with multiple different types of play areas. The playhouse is inspired by a Japanese tea house. Some of these elements include a wandering path, a small entrance that one has to crawl in to enter, a circle window, lattice (for climbing a bit), and long horizontal window with views to a rock garden. Most of these elements from a Japanese tea house were used because of their playful attributes and not for traditional meanings. The front of the play house extends a bit like a porch to sit on, particularly for grown ups to sit without needing to duck. The circle window is also a sundial. This is one of my favorite parts of the design. The sun casts a circle of light that is centered on the house at noon. This is nice for me to know what time is it to coordinate lunchtime when we are outside playing. I know I could wear a watch but this is much more fun for me!
The rock garden consists of small pea pebbles and instead of larger rocks (from traditional Japanese gardens) I used tree stumps. The pea pebbles offer a play medium and the stumps offer a surface to play on. There is also a sandbox offering another textural element for play. There is a path leading from the rock area to underneath the hedge canopy for a secluded space. We needed to build a small wall to level the rock area and beyond that we have rocks and mulch with plantings that can be played around, on and within. I intended the front floor structure to be off the ground plane a bit more but I didn't realize how much our yard sloped.
We do have tea in this house and one day I would like to teach my daughters a traditional tea ceremony (which I enjoyed while traveling in Japan). The girls like climbing in and out of it. They love to sweep the floor and bring toys out there and sit and play for along time. The rocks and sand occupy their time as well. I foresee this as a great stage someday. I think the playhouse will support creative play as the children grow older. I'm glad we spent the time and money on this.

Flat-packed Play Space by Gregg Fleishman

I ran across this Asian inspired flat-packed play space by Gregg Fleishman and couldn't resist sharing! Fleishman is an architect and artist whose work is driven primarily by geometry. I did an earlier post on his structures, but you can also find more information as well as tons of photos on his site. He's even done a car!

I've been doing a bit of research on this particular type of construction. Gregg Fleishman's work is probably the most complex example I have found. All of the pieces interlock and support themselves. No tools or hardware are required, making assembly quick and relatively easy. This method is ideal for designing small indoor play spaces for children. Having small children (and a small house), I understand the importance of being able to take down and store large toys. The pieces of plywood can be disassembled and stored flat when not in use...but really, when would you ever want to not use this!

Swiss Chalet

Wow! Isn't this gorgeous! Russell Bowlby of Flights of Fantasy created this beautiful storybook playhouse for a businessman's two very lucky children. The playhouse was modeled after the family's chalet in foothills of the Swiss Alps...doesn't that just sound picture perfect! Not only is this timber structure covered with beautifully crafted woodwork, it's also fully equipped with a mini kitchen, TV, and underfloor heating. You may think heated floors are a bit excessive, but when designing a playhouse for such extreme weather conditions heated floors, double glazed windows, and insulated walls are a must. This two story playhouse also has four beds! I wouldn't mind staying there! I don't have interior pictures of this one yet, but there are several interior shots of Bowlby's other designs on his site. He also has a nice collection of playhouse furniture that's worth looking at.

After a new paint job

Here's a super fast weekend project! My mom saved all of my playhouse furniture, so needles to say I've got a storage building full of projects just waiting. After the play kitchen redo, I was reminded of the much less involved rocking chair remodel that I did a while back. My attention span is much like that of my three year old, so the quicker the project can be completed the better.

This one only took a couple of hours, but made a big impact. First, I sanded the chair down just enough to get the original finish off. A couple coats of spray paint, and done!

Play Kitchen Redo

Finding a reasonably priced play kitchen for a boy (that meets my design standards) is nearly impossible. My original plan was to design and build it from scratch, but with the deadline being Christmas, there just wasn't enough time. After extensive online research, I finally decided on a Battat (Target) play kitchen which I quickly discovered was a discontinued model. Why is it that once I get my mind set on something it's not available? Thankfully I was able to snag one on ebay. If you can get past the bright blue, this is a good solid kitchen.

I could have just assembled the kitchen and been done, but why make life during the holiday season less complicated. This thing is going to be a permanent fixture in our dining room for at least a few years, might as well look decent. My son would have been more than happy with it the way it was (probably would have added a couple Thomas stickers). So with that being said, I'll admit the play kitchen was for him, but the redo was for me. I am so thankful my husband no longer questions my insanity. His only requirement was that I have it painted and ready for him to assemble the Wednesday before Christmas. (We were putting it together the night before).

The kitchen came in a gazillion pieces! I decided to paint everything that was primary blue white. Everything else stayed the way it was. It took two coats of primer and two coats of finish paint before the bright blue was gone. As most projects go, it took longer than expected, but really wasn't that bad. Spray paint may have worked just as well, but we already had the white from our real kitchen remodel...an ongoing never ending process.

The back is covered in scrapbook paper - super easy and fast. I used spray adhesive to glue it to the back panels before assembling it. Once it's assembled the paper is sandwiched between the wood and isn't going anywhere. If I were going to do this again, I would seal the paper with something before putting it together, just in case my little cook gets messy. Wallpaper or even a scrap of fabric would also make a great back splash. Since it's such a small area you really don't need much. Finding a pattern that wasn't too girly was a bit of a challenge. I get very distracted went looking at pretty paper.

Christmas morning! Please excuse the PJs. Grandma gave him some really cute Christmas ones, but he doesn't always wake up wearing what he went to bed in. Who really cares if pants and shirts match at 2 am?

Now it's time to hit the flee market and find some dishes!

Fold Down Fort

Little Sprout's Indoor Hideaway

The cold winter months have brought most of us indoors, so unless your playhouse has heat you may have to get a little creative when it comes to finding a warm place for your child to play. Over the next few weeks I'm going to try to focus (as best I can) and pull together several indoor playhouse ideas. I've got a few lined up, but am always looking for more, so if you have a project let me know. Cotton Blossom of Wit Behind the Ears did an amazing job turning an unused room into a magical play space for her daughter in just four days. That's right four days! Wow! It's amazing what can be accomplished with a Christmas deadline. I've got a few pictures of the project here, but you really should check out the full story from the beginning here.

Tucked away at the end of a hallway this indoor playhouse has it all! Beautiful whitewashed wood floors, a to die for vintage fridge, and a claw foot tub, what more could a girl ask for? While this playhouse is definitely any girl's dream, most of its furnishings were already on hand and just needed a little (or a lot) of refinishing.

Details are what really make a space. If you're on a time line starting from scratch is not always the way to go. See what you have that can be reused or hit the junk/antique stores. A little paint and a lot of work can go a long way. Modifying the antique bed made it just the right scale for the playhouse. The tub was small to begin with...I don't think you can do much to alter one of those other than refinish it...no small task. Oh, one thing I would like to note, the table cloth is made of outdoor fabric (anyone with a child knows why this is a brilliant idea).

I could go on and on with this one, but I've got to stop somewhere. I hope this has inspired you. I know it's got me thinking...where can I carve out just a tiny bit of space?

I know I'm a little late with my Merry Christmas, but isn't this image beautiful! There's something magical about twinkling lights and snow. I know there are a lot of you out there that have decked out you playhouse for the holiday season, and I'm expecting to see some pictures. I decided to focus on family and the holiday season during the month of December. Time away from the computer has allowed me to work on some projects that I will be sharing soon. Habitat's Traveling Playhouse Fundraiser

Habitat for Humanity of Jackson, Mississippi took a new route with their annual Habitat Hideaway fundraiser. Instead of designing and building several houses and auctioning them off, one playhouse was built and showcased all over town. The tiny house started out at the Renaissance, made it's way to Fondren Unwrapped, and concluded its journey at Chimneyville Crafts Festival where it was raffled.

Playscapes is a must if you're considering playground design. You'll find an extensive amount of inspiration ranging from playground history to the most current cutting edge designs.

Here's a little glimpse of what it's all about:
Because it's difficult to find non-commercial playground information. And I find that frustrating.
Because a playground doesn't have to cost a million bucks and come in a box. In fact, it's better if it doesn't.
Because playgrounds are under-recognized as an artistic medium.
Because everybody loves a playground.

Be prepared to spend hours there! It will change the way you think about playground design.

One of the many great finds at playscapes is the work of Artefakty, a Poland based group that creates outdoor play structures for children (along with many other things) that are not only fun to explore but are also works of art. If you have the time to look at more of their work (there's a lot more), notice the details, how the roofs are made, the curved forms, the subtle stains. Every piece is thoughtfully designed and beautifully executed.

Haunted Cardboard Playhouse

Bella Meade Playhouse - Before and After

This adorable Victorian playhouse circa 1870 is a part of the Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville, Tennessee. It was used by the Harding-Jackson children in the late 1800s and then by the 20th century descendants before being returned to the Belle Meade property.

I had to include both of these images. It's not often that you find a before and after of a 140 year old playhouse! While I love the redo, I have to admit there is something charming about the white version. If anyone has interior shots, please send them my way.

Every Little (or big) Girl's Dream Retreat

I'm officially way behind on my posts. Having a baby has slowed me down, but I've got a lot of great things coming up! I'm going to do a bit of backtracking, and then onto some more current projects. I am currently turning my garage/shed into a working studio/shop, and was inspired by this project. I love the girly white interior...I wonder how feminine I can make a shop? This is going to be a real challenge. Power tools and chandeliers don't exactly go together. Please, if you have any suggestions I'd love to know what you're thinking. I'll post pictures soon of what I'm working with.

Back in June The New York Times did a great article on this hidden treasure. Sarah Foster renovated and furnished the 9'x14' shack for only $3,000. That's right, only $3,000! Don't get me wrong, that's still a good bit of money, but you can't get a cheep storage building for that. While it's not a playhouse, it's every little girl's dream. Can you imagine hiking through the woods and stumbling upon this hidden retreat? I was a bit of a tomboy growing up, but there's still a side of me that can't resist crystal and white lace.

The Swiss Family Robinson playhouse designed by Imagine Homes for the San Antonio Botanical Garden's Playhouses and Forts Exhibit could be yours! The playhouse will be auctioned off November 3rd on Ebay. Proceeds from the playhouse will benefit Texas Public Radio. Bidding starts at $1000...not too bad for a house valued at $4500. Seven other playhouses were designed for the exhibit and will be on display through October 24th, so if you're in the area check them out!

This castle playhouse rocks! Check out the handmade wooden stones! If someone told me they were going to make faux stone foundation wall of wood, I would have frowned, but this is just beautiful. Kalleen of At Second Street has a great documentation of the construction process as well as many more pictures of the finished product. Her father built the castle for his grandchildren using primairly salvaged materials. They even had a roof raising part to install the old satellite dish that makes up the roof. If this doesn't inspire you to rethink what you do with that pile of old wood I don't know what will!

Book Nook

When it comes to using salvaged materials the possibilities are endless! There's no need to limit yourself to the traditional building materials, just look around and keep an open mind. The book nook, built by Nathan Nissen for the Iowa City Public Library, provides a perfect place for small children to curl up and read. The wooden structure is infilled with discarded children’s books. The roof is even shingled with books! Artist Deanne Wortman and her son, Eric Wortman added finishing touches to the tiny house including the fun, whimsical paint job.

Designing With Reclaimed Materials

I sat down at my desk to design a playhouse that would be build with reclaimed materials and quickly realized the process that I have become familiar with was not getting me anywhere. I could not sketch out an idea if I had no clue what I would be able to actually construct it with. Within minutes I went from frustrated to I can't wait to see what I can find! The scavenge is on!

The sleeping cabin above,designed and built by Victor Summers of Simple Shelter Texas, was inspired by the Shinto temples of Japan. All of the materials used were salvaged with the exception of the corrugated tin roof. The reclaimed materials were very thoughtfully composed giving the tiny structure a rich, unique character. Inspiring images!

Folding Cardboard Play Space

Imagine having you own life size pop-up book that folds out into a playhouse! My Space by Liya Mairson was designed for young children and is perfect for anyone who doesn't have a lot of room. When folded up it could easily be stored under the bed or behind a door. I love the idea of building spaces inspired by illustration, but creating a space based on the construction of a book is genius.

Playing in cardbord boxes has come a long way since I was a kid! An appliance box and some markers would keep us busy for days. There are several options available now if you are looking to purchase a cardboard box playhouse, or you could go the old fashioned route and make your own. Regardless of whether or not you start from scratch, have fun and be creative!

Japanese Inspired Playhouse

This amazing Japanese inspired playhouse by Architect, Bob Borson is just one of 17 playhouses that will be auctioned off at Northpark Mall benefiting Dallas CASA. They are all available for viewing through August 22nd. For more pictures including construction documents check out Bob's blog, Life of an Architect. The detailing on this playhouse takes it to another level that you don't typically see in playhouse construction. The wood shake shingle roof is beautifully crafted, and I love how the walls have dimension or depth. The open lower portion of the playhouse not only adds interest, but also allows for great ventilation. Can I get one of these scaled for an adult?

The ability to design a space inside and out, not neglecting a single detail, has from the beginning drawn me to playhouse design. Tiny buildings like this one have an object like quality about them. Because of their scale and coherent design concept you begin to see space as an object capable of possession. Most architecture, even residential, is so large and complex that it is not possible to comprehend the entire structure at one time. The playhouses will be on display until September 10 where they will be auctioned off to benefit Homeaid, whose mission to build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives.

Ruby's Playhouse

Once again I am shamelessly reaching back (way back) to a playhouse that has already made the blog rounds. Ruby's playhouse is definitely worth taking a minute to reflect on, and I couldn't possibly leave this one out. Clare Crespo and her husband created this amazing fun space for their daughter! The playhouse was made primarily from reclaimed materials. The design of the interior is an ongoing process, as it should be.

While it may be difficult, especially for someone with a design background, giving up control and letting your child "claim" their space is important. Don't get me wrong, showing interest in their world and giving them a little design guidance is a great way to spend time with your child. Just remember, this is a place where they can be creative. There is no such thing as colors that don't match or patterns that don't go together.

Flat Packed Playhouse!

Flat packed products have been around for a while and with good reason. They're easy to transport, assemble, and store. One of the more common uses of this technology is seen in furniture design, but it is becoming more and more prevalent in building construction. For playhouse design transportation can often be an issue. Using flat packed technology can cut down on shipping cost as well as make it easier to store the house when it's not in use.

This flat packed playhouse also known as Phoyo (Play House Of Your Own) is great example of taking a basic concept and tuning it into a fun functional play space. Architect Robin Hannah originally designed and built his first flat packed playhouse for his children in the 1970's. Now he has recreated a version of the playhouse for his grandchildren as well as anyone else who wants to purchase one. (Prices range from 429.00 to 499.00 plus shipping from New Zealand).

I'm anxiously awaiting a new set of colored pencils that I ordered over a week ago. I can't wait to fill my sketchbook with fun, quirky, colorful playhouses! Most of the work I've done so far has been pen and ink, which I love, but I think it's time to push these designs to another level and add some color. The sketch above is from January 2008. It's a really old sketch that I did very quickly just to get the idea down on paper. Now I think it's about time to revisit it and add some detail.

The next few weeks are going to be very busy. We are expecting our second baby boy July 30th! Bear with me if the post get a bit slim over the next month or so. I am not one of those people who works well when sleep deprived. There are a lot of exciting things coming up for A Place Imagined. Until now this blog has consisted mostly of playhouse inspiration that I have collected over the past years. It is my hope that this year will be a year of creativity where you will see more of my work as well as fun playhouse related projects for you and your children to try at home. Hopefully, very soon, I will have playhouse plans available for download.

How fun are these! Casa Kubaa by Studio Papas takes building blocks to a whole new scale allowing children to physically interact with their creations. The giant lightweight blocks encourage children to use their imaginations and work together to create their own unique ever changing environments. The Casa Kubba playhouse consist of 12 foam blocks covered with a soft durable coating. These would be ideal in an educational setting but would also be great in a play room.

Indoor Toddler Playhouse

Finding a tastefully designed indoor toddler playhouse can be difficult, so I was delighted when I discovered this one. Check out the stump table sitting next to it! Both were designed and built by Justin Ferro of Stumpy Lumpkins. He creates natural toys ranging from spoons to mini kitchens made from wood collected in the forest near his home. Justin's work is focused on using sustainable construction practices and natural materials. These are great examples of timeless toys that could be passed on from generation to generation.

After seeing images like these I can't wait to see the Playhouses & Forts exhibit at the San Antonio Botanical Garden! All of the creations invite visitors to have fun and participate in some way.

As I was browsing through the images from the 2010 R'Kidtecture event I started to notice a re-occurring theme. Eight of the twenty playhouses were cubes! I found this intriguing. Why would so many architects and designers when given complete freedom to design choose the cube form? Coming from an architectural design background, I can not count the times I have heard "think outside the box." Is this a subconscious rebellion against that familiar saying? Regardless of where the inspiration for these playhouses came from they are each beautifully crafted boxes.

Why think outside the box when you can play inside one?

Wendy House

Didn't want to leave this one out! It's another design by Sanei Hopkins Architects. This playhouse is similar in many ways to Heike's playhouse made of windows. Both houses act as display cases placing importance on what is showcased inside of them. This is a great opportunity to show off some cool furniture!

If you are planning on building a playhouse primarily made of windows pay careful attention to where the house is located. Depending on your climate you may want to make sure there is plenty of shade, and that at least some of the windows are operable. Placing the house up on a platform not only adds to the stage like affect, but also allows air to circulate under the floor. This will help keep the play space cool on those hot summer days. The last thing you want to do is create a glass box that is unbearable to play in. In the right location this could be the perfect place to have an afternoon snack and watch the birds. I'm considering an adult scaled version of something similar to this located in the "deep woods" near my parents house.

Modern Tree House

In all of my research on play spaces I have never come across anything quite like this modern tree house by Sanei Hopkins Architects. The design was based on the "pig arc," a simple farm structure that houses pigs. While this may seem an unlikely place to find inspiration, many architects have found beauty in vernacular forms. What a great example of taking a common structure and looking at it in a fun new way! This play space is elevated giving new meaning to the phrase "when pigs fly!"

*If you are planning on using corrugated metal make sure the sharp edges are covered.

English Cottage Playhouse

Robert Mahrer of RMGC Inc. a Santa Cruz, California based residential construction company built this adorable playhouse. The way the tiny house sits at the edge of the forest and is carefully integrated into the landscape adds to the overall storybook quality of the play space. I have to admit the formal landscaping here puts our yard to shame!

After a close look, it is obvious that this is not your typical playhouse construction. The roof, characteristic of the storybook style, is covered in steam bent wooden shingles laid in a wave pattern and rolled under at the eaves. Windows and doors were all custom made out of redwood, and the diamond patterned leaded glass windows were even made by a local glass artist. Exterior stucco walls give it a heavy stone look, and yes that is a chimney! The interior has a pine floor, stained exposed framing, and painted walls. By combining the whimsical setting with the uniquely crafted architectural details Robert has created a magical hideaway.

High school students from Berkeley Preparatory School help put the finishing touches on this playhouse by Eileen Goldenberg. I can't wait to see all of the finished houses for the R'Kidtecture fundraiser! Approximately 20 houses designed by artist and architects will be unveiled at a preview party to be held at Reeves Import Motorcars in Tampa on March 26th, 2010. I realize I'm a little behind posting a fundraiser from last year, but I couldn't leave these out. They're great examples of the variety you can find in playhouses. Doodle House

Being trained as an architect, it's difficult to sketch without constantly thinking of how something will actually be constructed. I think that is one reason I admire children's drawings. They are fearless when it comes to creating! I had a lot of fun with this doodle...it was very liberating to let go of logic and just sketch. After finishing it and taking a step back, I realize it's still a bit constrained and could probably even be built. Regardless of how it turned out, I'm going to continue to sketch seeking that place where the imagination is not bound by reason.

Laure Tixier's Plaid Houses

I was blown away by this body of work! Laure Tixier has created nine colorful kid sized structures whose forms were derived from a series of drawings and models. I have only included a few of her sketches but highly recommend checking out the rest of them on her site. You really have to see them all to get a grasp of the totality of the work. The sketches explore dwellings of various cultures and times ranging from primitive huts to wild futuristic creations. Felt was the choice material because it represents the tent like creations of children. Architecture recognizes the primitive hut as the most basic form of shelter, but if you push the idea further you may find that a child under a blanket is actually where it all began.

On Laure's blog there are pictures of the construction process that give a better idea of the scale of the houses and work involved in creating them.

Natural Play Huts

Green specializes in designing natural play spaces. They, "Enhance existing and natural features of a landscape to create exciting, interesting and beautiful spaces for learning, play and being together." The two huts above are just a couple of the structures they have designed to fit within the landscape. If you're looking for more information on natural play spaces their site is a great resource.

Most of the time when we design, we imagine a space fixed in time never ageing, but a natural play space evolves with the landscape. It changes with the seasons and matures with time.

The Surf Shack along with four other playhouses are part of the Playhouse Palooza fundraiser benefiting CASA of Northwest Arkansas. Tickets to win the Surf Shack can be purchased at the Northwest Arkansas Mall for $5 each for 5 for $20. The other four playhouses will be auctioned. All of the houses are currently on display at the Northwest Arkansas Mall and will be there until March 13th. I've just added “Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts (and whatever the heck else we could squeeze in here!)" by Derek “Deek” Diedricksen to my book wish list. Unfortunately I haven't gotten the book yet, so I can't give it a proper book review, but judging by the two images above it's got to be packed with fun inspiring ideas!

Crooked Little House

Catherine, a grandmother of two boys, has created a whimsical playhouse that doubles as an outhouse! At first I thought, how could this work? A porta potty is actually moved in or out as it's needed! I would have never have thought of combining these two functions, but in this case it seems to work.

Nothing in the playhouse is square, making framing a bit more difficult. First, Catherine made sketches, but the final shape was a result of trial and error. As she framed the house she would step back and evaluate, sometimes taking parts down and rebuilding. I can imagine designing and building a space like this must require a great deal of patience.

The door on this playhouse is not your typical door. In order to make it large enough for adults, but keep it scaled down for kids an illusion was created. If you look closely, the window above the door is actually part of the door! This solution allows adults to enter comfortably and at the same time it looks right proportionally.

Most of the materials are re-used. This is not only great for the environment (and pocket book), but it also adds instant character. The siding was from a downed oak on their property. A neighbor milled it for them. The roofing is recycled cedar shingles from an old cabin, and the deck is recycled redwood from a friend's deck renovation. At the back of the house there is even a salvaged stained glass window!

Playhouse Complete With Garage

No details were overlooked on this adorable playhouse by Judy of Cutest Little Things. She and her husband collaborated on the design taking inspiration from other playhouses they liked. The garage (one of my many favorite parts) was her husbands idea. Having a two year old son of my own, I'm always thrilled to see play spaces designed for boys. My son would love it! And I have to admit, it would be nice to have a place to store the growing assortment of tools and cars that are taking over our house.

One of the things that drew me to this playhouse was the details...the things that make a house a home. I understand that children don't necessarily need all of the bells and whistles, but each one of these little details is an opportunity to make or do something with your child. Let them help you build a mailbox or plant flowers in the flower box. These are the memories that will last a lifetime.

Recycled Play Huts

Environmental and human rights activist Katell Gélébart has found a way to give new life to old water tanks. By cutting holes for windows and doors and adding a fun coat of paint, she transformed what would have been thrown away into a great play space for children. The little play huts are located at The Dune Eco Resort/Village near Pondicherry in South India.

It is very inspiring to see more and more people taking a second look at old materials and finding creative ways to re use them. I think there are many more objects out there that could be easily transformed into great plays paces for children. For many people spending large sums of money on elaborate playhouses is not an option, but that doesn't mean you can't create an amazing place for your child to play. As always, if you're planning on making your kid a playhouse out of nontraditional materials keep safety in mind, and send me pictures. Can't wait to see more recycled playhouses!

Quirky Playhouse

This has to be one of the quirkiest playhouses I have ever seen! With it's over sized roof and tiny bottom it appears to defy gravity. I'm still not sure why it doesn't topple over. I admire the playful child like quality this design has. It's often difficult to let go of the "rules" we have learned such as correct proportion and allow ourselves to design with complete freedom.

The guys over at Allcity Carpentry really out did themselves with this one!

As I was digging through some old folders I came across this design. I started working on it about a year (or maybe two) ago. It's still a bit abstract. The details haven't been fully worked out, but the basic concept is there. The pattern on the side wall of the playhouse is intended to be constructed in layers, giving it real dimension. It is actually two patterns, each painted or stained on a different layer of wood. As the design develops I'll post more pictures including one of the front.
